Charlton’s U21s kicked off their Premier League Cup campaign with a dramatic 2-1 triumph over Preston North End on Tuesday Night.
Having fallen behind to George Gryba’s 55th-minute opener at Victory Park, the young Addicks turned the contest on its head with two late goals from Emmanuel Sol-Loza and Henry Rylah.
Chris Lock’s side made a lively start in Lancashire, calling North End stopper Li-Bau Stowell into action in the opening minute as he kept out Sol-Loza’s effort.
Theo Carroll fired just wide at the other end before George Hardy produced a pair of smart saves to deny Oliver Tonkin and Felipe Rodriguez-Gentile.
Gryba gave the hosts the lead 10 minutes into the second period, capitalising on a defensive error and applying a simple finish.
There was a lengthy stoppage midway through the second half as Ty Ewens-Findlay was stretchered off with an ankle injury.
Sol-Loza drew Charlton level shortly after play resumed, outmuscling his marker and firing across goal smartly.
Substitute Patrick Casey almost gave his side the lead as he met Ollie Hobden’s cross, only for Stowell to somehow keep it out.
The young Addicks’ winner instead came in the second of 14 added minutes when Rylah converted Sol-Loza’s cross from close range.
Lock’s side are next in action on Monday when they travel to Bristol City (KO 1pm BST).
