Charlton awarded gold in EFL Equality Code of Practice

-

Charlton Athletic are proud to confirm that the club has been awarded the EFL’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Gold Award as part of the Equality Code of Practice, recognising the club’s continued commitment to creating an inclusive environment.

The EFL’s Equality Code of Practice forms part of the league’s framework designed to support clubs in developing and embedding best practice across EDI. The awards recognise clubs that demonstrate a clear commitment to making football accessible, welcoming and representative of the communities they serve, both on and off the pitch.

Charlton were previously given the Silver Award in 2024 and the Gold Award now represents the highest level of recognition within the framework, highlighting that the club have implemented comprehensive policies, strong governance and meaningful community engagement around EDI.

The Addicks’ recognition reflects the club’s long-standing dedication to ensuring that The Valley is a place where everyone feels welcome and valued.

The achievement is the result of a collective effort with standards required for gold recognition being driven by the commitment and collaboration of staff across both the club and Community Trust, alongside the ongoing work of the club’s internal EDI Working Group.

Charlton are one of only seven clubs across the EFL to have received the prestigious Gold Award, underlining the club’s position as a leader in promoting equality, diversity and inclusion within professional football and its local community.

The club’s Vice-Chairman Paul Elliott CBE MBE said: "This has been a massive collective effort. We have great teams [men's and women's] on the field with great managers, and a great team off the field in the club workforce. There has been a magnificent effort to enhance equality, diversity and inclusion within the football club, because it is embedded in our culture and our DNA.

"Historically, EDI has been embedded in every facet of this football club. Charlton has always been so diverse, so inclusive and so welcoming.

"We have to ensure we are fair, ethical and equal. Football is a wonderful sport, and to be selected for this award speaks volumes in their estimation of us as a club."

Meanwhile, Dr Michael Seeraj, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for both the club and Community Trust, added: “We are very proud to have been awarded the Gold level under the EFL Equality Code of Practice. This is a significant milestone and reflects a genuine collective effort across both the Club and Community Trust, and reinforces our shared commitment to placing equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of everything we do.

"I would like to express my sincere thanks to our CAFC EDI Advisory Panel, whose members, representing our Fan Groups and external partners, consistently challenge, guide, and strengthen our work, as well as to our CAFC EDI Staff Working Group for their passion, insights, and continued drive. At the same time, we recognise that all Clubs across the EFL and the Premier League, at every level of the Code of Practice, are delivering some great and impactful EDI work. Their efforts contribute enormously to the wider game, and we are proud to be part of a Football Community that is striving together to create positive change.

"As national conversations about EDI and Football become more prominent, I would also like to recognise the leadership shown by the EFL, as well as the FA and the PFA, in advancing EDI across the professional game. Their structured approach provides clear standards, practical support and a shared sense of purpose that benefits every Club. It is important to reaffirm the evidence‑based, community‑centred nature of this work.

"The Equality Code of Practice provides a robust framework that supports Clubs in embedding inclusive practice in a sustainable and measurable way. Football’s commitment to inclusion is about ensuring that our sport reflects, respects, and welcomes the diverse communities it serves - building bridges and togetherness, rather than division and walls that keeps us apart. Football’s approach helps Clubs do exactly that: build environments where fairness and opportunity are strengthened through thoughtful practice and a shared commitment to continuous improvement. We are proud to stand alongside our Football peers in contributing to this collective progress.

"So, as a Club, while we acknowledge this achievement, we also remain focused on listening, learning and building on the progress made so far. Our goal is to continue building an environment where everyone feels welcomed, valued and respected. Most importantly of all, this recognition belongs to our entire Charlton Family – our Fans, Staff, Players, and the communities we serve - it is their voices, experiences and belief that shape our EDI journey every day - All Different, All Together, All Charlton”.
