Docherty: 'We want to put a mark down'

'

Greg Docherty says he and his teammates are relishing Saturday's contest against near neighbours Millwall.

"Us players are fully aware, make no doubt about that, of how big a game this is," explained the skipper. "Every game in this league is huge because points are so hard to come by, as it’s shown.

"The interaction with our fans through pre-season and at the start of the season has been really good and they’ve all talked about this game. They’re all excited for it and I think that’s brilliant. This is why we’re involved in football: to play in these games and to support your club in these games.

"This is a game where we want to put a mark down and we’ll do our best to do that. There’s a buzz about the place and we can’t wait to get to The Valley on Saturday morning, experience the build-up and then the game comes and hopefully we can go and win."

This weekend will be the highest attended fixture between the Addicks and the Lions in more than 50 years and the sixth successive league or play-off fixture at The Valley to with over 20,000 supporters.

"I’ve been very fortunate to play for clubs with big crowds and I’ve played in some derbies as well, but when Godders [Matty Godden] scored in the play-offs at home last season, I’ve never heard much like that," said midfielder. "It was incredible. To be fair, just the regular league games have been like that now as well.

"Hopefully the crowds can keep on growing, but that’s down to us as players to put on performances, get results and keep the fans coming. I think they can see that they’ve got a team that fights for the badge, fights for the club and wants to progress the club which is obviously a good thing for them.

"The Covered End has always been huge for us since I’ve been here and it’s something that we use to our advantage."
