Godden: 'That feeling was special'

Matty Godden enjoyed a special moment last weekend as the striker made his long-awaited return to action during the Addicks' win over Sheffield United at The Valley.

After almost eight months out, the striker has made late cameos against Sheffield United and Derby County in SE7.

"It's been a long journey and it's been tough at times," he explained. "Having to have the second surgery was not ideal. We got the second procedure done, which is the one that needed doing in the first place, and we're here now so that's the most important thing.

"Stepping out on to the pitch was obviously a nice moment, but when I got up to warm up that was the feeling that was more special to me more than anything. Luckily, I had my whole family there - I had 10, 12 people at the game and it was a nice moment.

"It's important now for me to stay fit and then help the team pick up some points," added the 34-year-old.

"Playing in the Championship with Charlton is what I wanted to do when I first joined here. I made it quite clear that I wanted to achieve promotion in my first year of being here and luckily we did it, and we probably did it the best way at Wembley. I've got unbelievable memories of that and it's about making more memories this year and in the future."

Previewing Saturday's trip to The Den, Godden said: "It's another tough game and a local derby. I have Millwall fans either side of me at home, so it's important for me. I know what it means to the club and what it means to the community. It's more than just a game to them - it's the bragging rights as well. We'll be going out there and giving it everything we've got."
