Nathan Jones was pleased to see his fight back from a goal behind to secure an important point on the road against Southampton.
Ross Stewart gave the home side the lead at the start of the second half but Sonny Carey found the net for the eighth time this season for a vital equaliser.
Speaking after the game Jones said: “It is a good point, these are a really, really good side. They are really fluid, they have some really good individual players. We know about the pedigree they have, so we had to be tactically good, we had to be really disciplined in our shape and we were that.
“In the first game we were too open and we got royally punished, today we couldn’t let that happen and I thought we were really disciplined in our shape. I’m happy with the point, there were 10 minutes of stoppage time, to be able to do that and to keep them down to very little clear cut I was pleased with the defensive performance.
“I was pleased with the response [after conceding]. It was uncharacteristic from us, we don’t tend to concede from crosses. It was just a little flipped ball, we weren’t touch tight. These have got a mammoth budget for the level, they’ve got a wonderful squad of talent, of variation and they are well coached. We were going to be tested, we were, we stood up to it and a point away from home is magnificent.”
Jones handed a Charlton debut to Kenyan international Collins Sichenje and was pleased with the defender.
When asked about his performance he said: “Magnificent, to make his debut away at Southampton. To come into it without playing for a little while – he was wonderful.”
He added: “The supporters were magnificent for a me all game. Our fans really warmed my heart today and I thank them for that.”
