Kelman on Mendonca celebration

Charlie Kelman scored twice as the Addicks drew with Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, celebrating both goals in the style of Charlton icon Clive Mendonca.

The 24-year-old has now netted four goals in his last six appearances for the club.

When asked about his celebration, he explained: “I was scrolling on TikTok this morning and I saw a Blackburn fan saying ‘we’ve got to beat Charlton, it’s only Charlton’ and then in the comments there was a photo of me clipped on Clive’s head, so it felt like I had to bring his celebration out today.”

Charlton secured a point on the road at Blackburn but felt they could have taken more from the contest.

“I’m disappointed,” Kelman said. “The positive is that we didn’t lose and that it is another point gained but we’re disappointed as a group. We pride ourselves on clean sheets and defending and concede two goals today. The second goal if I can just keep it in the corner or win a corner but it knicks them and it goes to the keeper and they run 80 yards and score. Sometimes that’s just football. We’re a disappointed group but we’re going to dust ourselves down and kick on.”

After joining the club in the summer, Kelman missed seven weeks after picking up an injury in Charlton’s draw with Swansea City at The Valley in November.

“Not having a pre-season was tough,” he said. “But I think having that injury was a blessing in disguise. It gave me that chance to work on things and I feel like myself again and I think it is reflective on the pitch. Causing problems, being strong and physical and quick. That’s what I pride myself on, and taking chances. It felt nice and hopefully I can kick on now.”
