Jones: 'It shows we've come a long way'

Nathan Jones claps supporters

Nathan Jones believes it underlines how far the Addicks have come that they are disappointed with a draw away at Blackburn Rovers.

Charlton raced into a two-goal lead at Ewood Park, but the hosts fought back to earn a point.

Speaking to CharltonTV, Jones said: “I’m frustrated, after going two goals up we’ve got to be better than that. The goals are really poor from our point of view, from the structure we use, from what we do and what we pride ourselves on, really, really poor.

“It was a tough game, it was our third of four games away from home. The weather was poor, the pitch was poor, it was never going to be a classic but once you go two up you think you are going to go on and win the game. I didn’t see us getting pegged back. The first goal really kills us. It really gave them a bit of impetus before half time because they hadn’t threatened. We’d done so well but we’ve given them that, we’ve got to defend that better.

“Then second half it was a bit of a basketball game, it was end to end. We had a couple of situations, Miles [Leaburn] has a great chance from Macca’s [Gillesphey] ball and then [James] Bree puts in a great ball but even then we think we can see it out.

“We go down to 10 men with Miles coming off [injured], we give the ball to their keeper, they break and then they score from that. It’s poor from our point of view and that’s the thing we’re frustrated with.”

Charlie Kelman found the net twice inside the opening 34 minutes, taking his tally to four goals in his last six Charlton appearances.

“He’s been excellent,” Jones said. “I was pleased with him before he got injured and then since he’s come back he’s been excellent. He’s a threat, he can finish. His first goal is a great finish and obviously the second one is a penalty but he’s a threat, he’s in good form and got a real good partnership with Miles. Miles is leading the line fantastically well, so that’s a real positive.

“We’re disappointed. This is Blackburn Rovers, they’ve been a Championship side for a long time and we’re coming here and we’re devastated with a point, so it shows we’ve come a long way.”

Jones also confirmed that Leaburn was forced off with cramp after another tireless display leading the line, while Reece Burke, who limped off in the first half, sustained an injury in a tackle and will be assessed.
