MATCH PREVIEW | Southampton v Charlton

Southampton Match Preview

Charlton Women travel to the south coast on Sunday to take on Southampton in the penultimate game in WSL2 (KO 4pm).

Charlton Athletic

The Addicks currently sit second in the league on goal difference with Birmingham City in first. The current top two will compete at The Valley on the final day of the season, which could have a huge effect on the final standings.

Before even thinking about that game, the Addicks have to first navigate a tricky tie against Southampton away, in the first game back for Charlton since the international break.

After the Liverpool game, Karen Hills reflected on the block of games between the last two international breaks. She admitted that it was a tough run, which saw the team lose four of their five games in all competitions. However, Hills believes that the break allowed the team to rest and recoup, and get ready for the final push.

Hills said, "It’s an opportunity for us to reset. I think this block, if we look at it, it’s been a tough block for us. But what I would say is that we are going to really focus on that performance today [against Liverpool].

"That performance, the way that we played, the character that we showed, the way that we fought for each other, those are the positives that we are going to take into our remaining block of work. We’re going to have two weeks, a little bit of time to rest and recover."

During the break, four Addicks were away with their countries, and you can read more about their fortunes here.

Southampton

The Saints are fifth in the WSL2 table, and were on a decent run of form before the break, winning their last two matches. Their final game before the break was a 5-2 win against Sheffield United at Silverlake Stadium, with a brace scored by ex-Charlton player Mary Bashford.

Bashford is not the only ex-Addick at Southampton, with Ellie Brazil, Atlanta Primus and Tegan McGowan all wearing the white and red.

Southampton cannot make it to the play-offs but are two points behind Newcastle in fourth and level with Bristol City in sixth, so they still have league positioning to play for.

Head-to-Head

This will be the 14th meeting in the history of this fixture. In the previous 13, Charlton have eight wins to Southampton's two, with three draws. The first time this match was played was back in February 2001, when Southampton Saints (who were later absorbed by Southampton F.C. in 2001) beat the Addicks 3-2 in the FA Cup quarter-final.

We have played the Saints twice this season, the first being a 2-1 win at The Valley, before meeting in the Subway Women's League Cup away, where the Addicks won in dramatic style by the same scoreline, thanks to a 97th-minute winner by Amalie Thestrup.
