Welling United 1 Charlton U21s 1 (Charlton win 4-2 on pens)

Todd Kane made his first appearance in a Charlton shirt since his debut in January as the Addicks advanced to the quarter-finals of the London Senior Cup with a 4-2 penalty shootout win at Welling United.

The full-back, who limped off in the 2-0 win at home to Barnsley shortly after joining on loan from Coventry City, got 61 minutes under his belt at Park View Road in a game that saw Welling force a penalty shootout with a late leveller.

Nathan Harness made an excellent early save low to his right to keep out Antony Papadopoulos’ shot in the 14th minute.

The young Addicks’ best chance of the first half came 12 minutes later when Euan Williams headed just wide from Jeremy Santos’ pinpoint cross from the right.

Welling winger Kyrell Lisbie, son of Addicks legend Kevin, saw a 55th-minute goal disallowed after Papadopoulos was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.

Charlton’s pressure increased and Jason Adigun shot wide from just inside the box before Santos’ dipping shot just cleared the crossbar.

Danny Senda’s side took the lead in the 66th minute in scrappy fashion when the Wings were unable to clear a set-piece. Substitute Kai Enslin kept the ball alive and Nazir Bakrin showed the most desire to get to a deflected ball in the box, looping his header across goal and in off the far post.

The home side nearly struck back immediately but substitute Nathan Asiimwe was able to clear off the line from Enoch Mowonge’s bobbling shot.

Welling did level to force a penalty shooutout as Padadopoulos calmly finished with just four minutes remaining.

Harness made a superb save to keep out Papadopoulos in the penalty shootout with skipper Adigun confidently dispatching the winning penalty for the young Addicks.
