Ben Purrington: “There’s no better feeling than being back, especially after the unbelievable year we had last year”

Ben Purrington, who re-joins Charlton to become Lee Bowyer's fourth summer signing, spoke to Valley Pass about his return from Rotherham United after agreeing a permanent 3-year-deal.

Purrington's Full interview will be made available on Valley Pass. Valley Pass costs just £6.50 per month and you can sign-up here.

The defender spoke about re-joining Charlton following his successful loan spell last season, which culminated in him scoring the equaliser in The Addicks' 2-1 win over Sunderland in the play-off final.

“It’s a great feeling to be back with the boys. There’s that same togetherness feel that we had last year, I had to get started with a hard session straight away! The boys are blowing a bit and it’s harder to [train] in this heat…

… Obviously it took a while to happen [the transfer] but there’s no better feeling now than being back, especially after the unbelievable year we had last year.”

When asked about his Championship experiences with Rotherham, Purrington admitted he had unfinished business with the second tier.

“I had a few games there with Rotherham in The Championship but that was a bad year really. Obviously it’s good to be back, hopefully we’ll have a better year and we’ll try and stay up and have a good go in the Championship.

It’s a great squad here, there’s a real good feel around the place and hopefully we’ll keep that going”

And speaking on his play-off final equaliser, Purrington was reserved in his belief of topping such a big moment.

“I don’t think I’ll ever beat that! It’ my third ever goal, I’ve got two in the FA Cup, but that was my first in the league.

It would be nice to get another [goal] at some point but I can’t take it for granted obviously and the most important thing is winning games.”

Purrington finished up by talking about Valley Pass’ new intern, Naby Sarr!

Just got to look at him, he’s made for it isn’t he. He’s got the blond in his hair now – He’s got a career after football!
