Bowyer "over the moon" with three away points at Blackburn Rovers

Addicks boss Lee Bowyer was thrilled with his team's impressive 2-1 away win over Blackburn Rovers to begin Charlton's Championship campaign.

Rovers had a lot of possession but struggled to create chances against a robust Charlton side.

Ben Purrington and Lyle Taylor got themselves on the scoresheet for an important three points for Bowyer's men, which he felt will give his team even more belief.

An interview with Lee Bowyer will be on Valley Pass later this evening. Valley Pass costs just £6.50 per month or £60 for the year and you can sign-up here.

Below are some of the talking points from his post-game interview with Sky Sports.

On his team's performance...

"I’m over the moon to come away from home, to a good football club in Blackburn, they finished mid-table last year, so it was a good challenge for us. I said earlier on in the week that it would give us an idea of where we are.

"It proves it to the players, I said to them ‘Believe in yourselves because you are going to surprise teams’. Now this has happened on the first day I’m over the moon for them because now they might realise how good they are and what they are capable of doing. Don’t forget, we’ve still got to bring in four or five more players, that’s what I just said to them, we’re going to get stronger as well. They just keep going and fighting and competing for everything. For as long as we’ve got that we’re going to be ok."

On the effort of the whole group...

"From back to front I thought we competed. We didn’t give them any chances, there is not a chance that comes off the top of my heading thinking ‘he should of scored there’ that didn’t happen. I think our back five worked really well. I think when they were crossing it we had three against one. I played with a diamond in front of them, Dack can hurt you, so I played Darren Pratley around him as a man-to-man marking job. It’s a bit old school but at times you have got to respect who you are playing against and that’s what we’ve done today. We respected them, realised their strengths and I know we’re always going to create chances, it’s just whether we take them. Thankfully we did."

On the importance of Purrington putting the Addicks in front...

"First goal in this division is massive. If the team goes one up then it is difficult to break them down. Obviously the goal that they scored came off the back of our goalie’s head which doesn’t happen any other week. I thought we were in control of the game and we limited them and when they did cross it we defended the box well."

On his side's attitude...

"Even if they do go behind they know ‘we can still win this’ and they keep going, keep fighting and we’re going to get chances and we have to take them. They will keep going and going and going and I know that. I know I keep saying it but the team spirit we have is really, really good and we can play and we can defend, so we’ve got a bit of everything here and we’re going to get stronger when we bring new bodies in."
