DONE DEAL | Charlton complete signing of Wales international Adam Matthews

Charlton Athletic have captured the signing of experienced right-back Adam Matthews on a one-year deal.

The 27-year-old Wales international joins the club after impressing on trial having trained with the Addicks for a number of weeks following his summer departure from League One outfit Sunderland.

Matthews began his career at Cardiff City, playing 48 times for the Bluebirds before being snapped up by Scottish giants Celtic in 2015. While at Celtic park, he made 148 appearances, including a number of outings in both the Europa League and Champions League, on the way to four league titles, as well as lifting both the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.

A move to Sunderland followed in 2015, taking in a loan spell at Bristol City along the way, and he left the Stadium of Light this summer having played 67 times for the Black Cats.

Adam is a good, solid professional. He has a lot of experience in the Championship and Scottish Premiership.

“I’m excited,” said Matthews.

“It’s been a tough summer for me personally, not knowing what was going to happen, so I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to come and train to the boys. I want to kick on now and, firstly, stay in the division, but the lads have started really well, so hopefully we can keep that going.

“I know Jonny [Williams] and Tom [Lockyer] well from Wales and I played with Beram [Kayal] at Celtic, so it’s been quite an easy transition for me and I’ve been training with the lads for a few weeks now, so I feel I can slot right in.”

Head of Recruitment, Steve Gallen, added: “He’s a good right-back who is very attacking and loves getting forward which is something that Lee [Bowyer] was keen on in particular.

“He’s completely proved his fitness and that he’s got a good attitude so he fully deserves the offer of a contract and balances out the squad. We wanted two players for every position and now we’ve finally got that.”

Matthews made his international debut for Wales in 2011 and he has gone on to win 14 caps for his country. He becomes Lee Bowyer’s 15th signing of a busy summer transfer period for the Championship season.

Shirt sponsorship is still available for the 2019/20 season. Supporters can sponsor Matthews or register their interest in player sponsorship by contacting the sales team on 020 8333 4050 or email sales at
