‘Frustrated’ Bowyer reflects on Charlton’s sickening defeat at Sheffield Wednesday

Lee Bowyer was left feeling frustrated and angry after he felt his side deserved more than to walk away with nothing after a last-minute goal denied Charlton a vital point.

Speaking after the game Bowyer shared explained his thoughts on the performance.

“I’m disappointed and frustrated and angry because my players gave absolutely everything and they didn’t deserve to come away with nothing tonight.”

Stephen Fletcher’s stoppage-time winner was the result of a free kick being awarded and Bowyer questioned whether that was the correct decision.

“I spoke to the ref afterwards and he explained that it was because our players sandwiched [Adthe Nuhiu]… A six-foot seven striker got sandwiched. It’s a contact sport, I’m sure it’s still a contact sport. There was minimal contact and then he gave a foul.

“It was about a meter in front of me and it was never a foul. It’s becoming a non-contact sport now… That’s the way that it is going anyway.

"It’s wrong because we deserve to come away with a point. And we leave with nothing over a decision."

Despite the performance, Bowyer was able to pick out some positives and hopes that the players will be able to learn from the mistakes.

“We’re in every game. We’ve just played a very good Sheffield Wednesday side at home, and we’ve competed with them. We hit the bar and they made a great block. Lyle Taylor had a nailed-on goal but that was some block from the centre half. We were in there and we were causing them problems.

“If we had just taken care in the final third. Young Alfie Doughty cutting across the pitch and then hits an under-hit pass. They are the things that decide between winning and losing and I thought that we did well at times.”

The Addicks’ attention now turns to Huddersfield Town on Saturday. The team will remain up north and Bowyer explains that it shouldn’t be too hard to pick them up.

“Yeah they’re a good bunch and they’re honest and no matter what game they go into they give one hundred percent. Its not going to be hard to pick them up. They’re going to be disappointed tonight but they’ll be training tomorrow so it shouldn’t be too hard to pick them up."
