Gunter set to captain Wales as he closes in on 100 caps

Chris Gunter will captain Wales against the USA on Thursday evening as the Addicks full-back closes in on 100 caps for his country.

The defender is Wales’ most capped player and he will earn his 98th appearance senior international appearance when they take on the USA in a friendly at Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium.

Wales will then prepare for a pair of UEFA Nations League matches in Cardiff against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday and Finland on Wednesday, November 18th. Should Gunter also play in both of those fixtures, he will reach the 100-cap mark.

Gunter’s teammates Jonny Williams and Dylan Levitt are also part of the squad and the duo will be hoping to build on their caps. Williams has 25 caps to his name and scored his first goal for his country against Bulgaria during the last international break, while Levitt has earned four caps since making his debut in September.

Elsewhere, Conor Washington is part of the Northern Ireland squad who take on Slovakia in a crucial UEFA European Championship qualifier play-off final on Thursday evening.

The in-form forward, who has netted five times for the Addicks, so far, this term, will be hoping to be involved at Windsor Park to help play his part towards his country qualifying for a fifth major tournament in their history with a place at next summer’s tournament up for grabs for the winners.
