Addicks Steal Last Minute Win at Southampton

Charlton Athletic Women Win in Subway League Cup

The Addicks ended their Subway League Cup campaign this afternoon on a high, cementing their final position as second in Group C. This afternoon’s win saw Charlton Athletic women leapfrog Brighton & Hove Albion to finish level on points with WSL outfit, West Ham United.

The first half at the Silverlake Stadium saw flurries of opportunities and periods of possession for both sides. Chances came and went, but both sides ultimately went into the break empty handed, though Charlton dominated possession.

The Saints saw more of the ball after the break, and the turning point came when Ellie Brazil gave the home side the lead in 70th minute, tipping the ball just over Anna Pedersen with a close-range header.

Southampton continued to create chances, but to no avail. Charlton found their groove again in the last 10 minutes of normal time, taking back possession and chances from The Saints.

The Addicks’ persistence paid off just before the 90th minute, when Charlotte Newsham hit the ball from close range following pinball action in the box. The ball hit the back of the net with force, giving Charlton the equaliser.

Both sides fought for the win in the seven minutes of added time, but ultimately Karin Muya was the player who made the key break before crossing the ball across to Amelie Thestrup who fired it home, snatching the win for The Addicks.

Despite a notably strong Subway League Cup campaign including a win at Brighton, The Addicks fall just short on goal difference of the first-place position needed to progress in the competition.

Charlton’s women next face Portsmouth away in league action before returning home to The Valley on Sunday, December 21st to face Nottingham Forest in their last battle of the year.
