Carey: 'The supporters are amazing'

Sonny Carey is expecting a tough test on Saturday when the Addicks travel to Southampton in the Sky Bet Championship (KO 3pm GMT).

Nathan Jones' side head to St Mary's Stadium looking to bounce back from a 3-1 reverse at home to Portsmouth in midweek.

"Tuesday was a tough game - the performance levels weren't there like they have been recently and we know that," Carey said.

"We've been there before when we've bounced back from defeat and we have to dust ourselves down. This league is relentless, you don't get time to dwell on things, so we go again on Saturday.

"Every game at this level is a test. We know from the home game what Southampton can do with the ball, so we know we have to be at it.

"The spirit is good, the training session was good today and we're looking forward to the weekend," he added.

"It's crucial we build some momentum. We have had three home games which has been good, we love playing at home with the fans and the atmosphere. But it's important to pick up results home and away in this league.

"The supporters are amazing, and have been from the minute I signed. They help us and we need them sometimes in the later stages in the game, they're brilliant."

Carey is currently the Addicks' leading goalscorer with seven strikes to his name so far this season.

"When I spoke to the gaffer when I joined, he said I know you can score goals from midfield, so I want you to do that for us this season," explained the midfielder. "I'm on seven so far this season which is a good return, but the main thing is that the team performs well.

"At the start of the season I set individual targets, and I'm on course to hit that. I wanted to get to 10 goals, that was my target. It's all about the team, that's the main thing, but it's nice to score some goals."
