Charlton Athletic are proud to announce that the club have been awarded EFL Green Club Silver status.
EFL Green Clubs is a league-wide voluntary scheme, delivered in partnership with GreenCode, that supports EFL clubs to improve their environmental practices and operations. It first launched in 2021 and was updated for the 2024/25 season to introduce a new assessment cycle that awards participating clubs with a status of “Participant”, “Bronze”, “Silver” or “Gold”.
The refreshed scheme presents a more rigorous assessment process that requires participating clubs to exceed standard sustainability measures, meaning all levels of the award represent a concentrated effort to implement environmentally sustainable practices at the club.
Charlton and Charlton Athletic Community Trust, supported by the club’s front of shirt and sustainability partner, RSK, have worked in partnership to establish baseline sustainability data and environmental impact targets focused on reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 15% and general waste production, as well as increasing recycling by 15% by 2030. These targets also include initiatives to increase biodiversity at both The Valley and the club's training ground by introducing native species by plug planting over 2,000 m² and creating new habitats by installing bird and bat boxes and log-piles.
Charlton and CACT have also refocused the Green Team, by combining representatives from both the club and charity, who will be working with club partners RSK, the University of Greenwich and Veolia UK, to oversee delivery of the published Environmental Impact Targets 2030 and to use the unique combination of skills that our partners can offer to deliver the new Green Team Manifesto. This Manifesto and the Environmental Impact Targets 2030 and other sustainability documents supporting our GreenCode Silver Award can be found on club's Sustainability webpage by clicking here.
The club's Chief Financial Officer, Ed Warrick, said: “Securing EFL Green Club Silver Status reflects our commitment to embedding sustainability at the heart of our strategic vision for Charlton Athletic across our business operations, community impact, and environmental responsibility.
"We've already delivered significant sustainability investments: with the upcoming state-of-the-art LED floodlighting at The Valley, transitioning to renewable energy supplies, and implementing enhanced water management systems. Our pipeline includes solar installations, EV charging infrastructure, deposit return schemes and biodiversity improvements.
"This recognition validates our approach of integrating sustainability into every aspect of our operations, strengthened by strategic partnerships like our deeply-valued relationship with RSK. This isn't just about environmental responsibility, it's about building a club that leads by example and creates lasting value for our community."
EFL Environmental Sustainability Co-ordinator, Ben Fisher said: “Everyone at the EFL is delighted to celebrate Charlton’s commitment to environmental sustainability and it is brilliant to have GreenCode on board to help us support the club at each stage of the assessment cycle. The club has worked hard to reduce their carbon footprint and make a positive impact on their local environment, and thoroughly deserve to be recognised for their efforts.
“EFL Green Clubs is one of several ways in which the EFL supports clubs to improve their sustainability practices. Throughout the season, we also deliver a full training and support package that enables us to share best practice across the league and to collectively tackle shared challenges in this area.”
Chairman of Forest Green Rovers and founder of the Greencode, Dale Vince, said: “It’s great to see the progress EFL clubs the are making on the vital issue of sustainability. The beauty of GreenCode is that it’s both achievable and impactful for clubs of all sizes. Together we’ll show that sport and the environment are a winning combination.”
EFL Green Clubs currently has about 30 EFL clubs signed up to the scheme, which is delivered in partnership with GreenCode, the environmental accreditation organisation run by the Green Britain Group. The assessment cycle takes place across two seasons with a development season during which clubs identify key priority areas and begin to implement environmental sustainability measures and protocols, such as a published environmental policy and a baseline carbon footprint.
