Saturday's Sky Bet Championship fixture against Wrexham marks the men's first-team's annual Football v Homophobia matchday.

Charlton Invicta and the Proud Valiants were recently invited to Sparrows Lane to deliver an education session to the men's first-team, women's first-team and academy players ahead of the club's dedicated Football v Homophobia themed matchdays.

Karen Hills' side celebrated their annual Football v Homophobia matchday during their 4-2 victory over Durham Women at The Valley.

February marks Football v Homophobia's month of action as clubs, teams, fan groups, leagues and organisations share the ‘Football For Everyone’ message and reaffirm their commitment to create safe and welcoming spaces in which LGBTQ+ people can thrive.

The club has run Football v Homophobia themed matchdays in each of the last nine seasons with the aim of promoting equality and tackling discrimination in football.

Charlton Invicta Chair Gary Ginnaw said: "Today gave us the chance to speak about Charlton Invicta, the journey we've been on, our affiliation with the Community Trust and how we've grown.

"The players are the ones out there living and breathing the game. They're role models to so many people and they can really impact how society sees LGBTQ+ people.

"To understand the issue that LGBTQ+ people go through in football and in general is massively important," he explained. "They can take those messages back to their families and friends.

"With the academy players, it will help the next generation to help make our game more inclusive."

Men's first-team defender Conor Coady explained: "It's massively important and February is massively important for them. In all honesty, it doesn't matter what campaign it is. With all campaigns within football, football can be used as a platform.

"The amount of reach this sport has is incredible, and if it means helping people like today, then we should do it."

Women's first-team defender Lucia Lobato added: "It makes me proud to wear the badge and walk around the facility knowing that we have an inclusive club with things such as the Proud Valiants and Charlton Invicta. It just makes you proud and happy."

Rob Harris, Chair of the Proud Valiants, the club's LGBTQ+ supporters' group that helps members of that community feel more welcome in football, delivered the session alongside Gary Ginnaw.

"We've been here to talk about Football vs Homophobia and the journey of the Proud Valiants. We've been through some of the stories people have been through to get to where they are today and what's coming up," Harris said.
