Karen Hills reflects on the win at Oxford United

Karen Hills speaks to her players after the Oxford game.

Karen Hills said it was a "great achievement" to reach the last eight of the Women's FA Cup, after her side won a tough tie 1-0 against Oxford United.

Hills made 10 changes to the side after the draw at Ipswich on Wednesday, and she was proud of the way the team played.

Hills said: "My girls, I thought, were excellent today. We made a lot of different changes, giving the squad the opportunity to showcase what they are all about, and I thought they were brilliant today, I really did.

"Oxford are a good side. The FA Cup always is a game that can throw you a curveball, but I thought we were very professional today. I thought we stuck to the task, and I’m super proud of every one of those players today."

Hills won the FA Cup with Charlton back in 2005 and now leads the team into the quarterfinals, where they will meet Liverpool. Speaking before the draw happened, Hills said she was "really pleased" that her team get to go into the hat, and, no matter who they were drawn against, would try to win.

"This cup is obviously a special cup in English football, and I’ve had the privilege of winning it, but that was many, many years ago, and I’m just really pleased for this group of players that we’ve managed to secure our place in the next round.

"The last eight is a great achievement for us, and these girls thoroughly deserve it after that performance today. We’re looking forward to seeing who we get in the next round, and always, the goal is to try win football games, and that’s what we’ll try and do in the next round."

This match against Oxford came at the end of a busy week for the Addicks, playing three games in seven days. The team came through that period unbeaten with two wins and a draw, and Hills said she thought the team had been "outstanding" during this period.

"This block of work has been outstanding, and I said that to the group in there. I said you should be really proud of yourselves, how you’re fighting for each other, how you’re challenging each other, and we’re going out and playing some top top teams, game after game, and these players keep coming through and doing what I know they can do, and that’s keep fighting, and I’m so proud of them.

"Every single one of them is contributing to the way that we are playing and contributing to the environment, and I’m so happy that we are in this position; they deserve it.

"Now the challenge is we have to have a bit of an international break, a reset moment, an opportunity for these players, some of them, to go away on international duty, different environment. Then the rest of us will stay back, we’ll have a couple of days to reset, and then we’ll be ready, and we’ll go again in the next block."

With the international break, Charlton won't be in action again until March 15th, when the unbeaten league leaders will face Sunderland at The Valley (KO 2pm GMT). Tickets are on sale now, so you can secure your ticket to cheer on the Addicks when they return to WSL 2 action.
