Coady: 'I have a big smile on my face'

Conor Coady was pleased to send the travelling fans home happy after scoring his first goal for Charlton in a big 1-0 win at promotion-chasing Middlesbrough.

Playing at centre-half Coady marshalled the defence and made some big blocks in addition to contributing the match-winning goal.

Speaking at full-time he said: “It feels amazing. Middlesbrough are a top team, they’re a really good side. We knew coming in here that they were in good form. They’re near the top of the league for a reason but I think that performance is what Charlton is all about, it’s what these fans have travelled for and we’ve given them a good trip home now.

“We spoke about it before the game, giving them something to cheer, giving them something to be proud of. We were playing against a real top side, so we had to dig in and stay together. It was outstanding from every single player, the lads who came on, the lads who played – absolutely brilliant. I have a big smile on my face.”

The goal itself came in the 59th minute, when Coady flicked home Harry Clarke’s long throw from the right.

“Going up I didn’t know Clarkey had the throw," Coady smiled, "so I shouted to Sonny [Carey] to ask him and he said he can do it and he threw it longer than Sonny. It was nice, a little bit of movement to get in front and I managed to get my studs on it.”

Charlton now travel to Oxford on Saturday as they look to add to their back-to-back 1-0 victories.
