Karen Hills said that she couldn't be "more proud" of her team after their unbeaten streak in the league was brought to an end by Portsmouth.
"Ultimately, I can’t be more proud of this group of players. They’ve gone 27 games unbeaten; it’s a remarkable achievement. There was always going to be a game that potentially challenged us, and tonight that was the game."
The 2-0 loss to Portsmouth at the Valley is the first time that Charlton Women have lost in WSL2 for 479 days. That incredible record is something the team did not give up without a fight.
Hills said that whilst it was "disappointing" to lose, she gave credit to Portsmouth's and to her team's response.
"This team has been unbelievable and will continue to be unbelievable. The togetherness that they showed week in, week out, day in, day out, it’s a joy to be around, and I’m really privileged to work with these players every single day, and this result is football.
"You’re always going to come up against teams who are goign to give you a challenge, and in the opening ten minutes, it was a couple of sucker pucnhces and we had to really work hard to try and break a really good Portsmouth team down today and I think credit to them, they have got to take a lot of credit and heart from that performance."
Whilst the comeback was not on here, Hills is already looking ahead to the next match against Sunderland on Sunday, and believes in her players' ability to bounce back.
"Obviously, Portsmouth are fighting for their lives at a different end of the table, so it was always going to be a tough game, and ultimately, we have to regroup, and we’ve got four days now to get ourselves back into the mindset of playing Sunderland here, and we’ll be ready for that game."
