DONE DEAL | Addicks complete Lloyd Jones signing

Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the signing of Lloyd Jones.

The centre-back has penned a two-year deal with the club and will officially join upon the expiration of his contract at Cambridge United.

Jones arrives at The Valley having won all four of Cambridge’s 2022/23 Player of the Season accolades.

The 27-year-old, who has represented both Wales and England at youth level, becomes the Addicks’ second summer signing following the arrival of goalkeeper Harry Isted.

After sealing his switch to SE7, Jones said: “It feels amazing to be here. Charlton is such a big club with great history and I can’t wait to get going.”

Manager Dean Holden added: “Lloyd signs for us on the back of an excellent season at Cambridge United. He's a very good centre-half who plays with real authority, is confident on the ball and a threat from set pieces. He’s a good leader with experience of captaining sides.

“Our set piece record, both defensively and in front of goal, was a clear area where we wanted to improve on last season and Lloyd will be important for us in both boxes.”

CEO Peter Storrie said: “Lloyd is someone we’ve been looking at for quite a while, so we’re really pleased he’s joined the club. He had several options elsewhere but wanted to be a part of what we are trying to achieve here. He was outstanding last season and will be an important player for us this season.

“We’re looking to build a squad that has a good balance of youth and experience throughout and bringing in Lloyd, who is moving into his prime years, can only help with that balance.”

The defender began his youth career with hometown club Plymouth Argyle, before departing Devon for Liverpool in 2011.

He soon impressed for the Reds’ U21 side and was subsequently named in a Premier League squad for Liverpool’s trip to Fulham in May 2013.

During his five years on Merseyside, Jones built up valuable EFL experience during loan spells with Cheltenham Town, Accrington Stanley, Blackpool and Swindon Town.

He completed a permanent move to Luton Town in January 2018, before returning to Plymouth on loan a year later.

Jones then enjoyed an impactful loan stint with Northampton Town, which resulted in a permanent switch to Sixfields. He captained the Cobblers in the latter part of the 2020/21 campaign.

The centre-back most recently spent two years in League One with Cambridge, scoring four goals - including a close-range strike against the Addicks at the Abbey Stadium in March 2023.
