Five memorable Chelsea clashes

Charlton host Chelsea in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup at The Valley on Saturday (KO 8pm GMT).

The Addicks and the Blues have gone toe-to-toe 71 times over the years and ahead of this weekend's meeting, we take a look back at some of the most memorable meetings.

Charlton 5 Chelsea 2 (1982/83)

The 1982/83 campaign saw Charlton finish 17th in the Second Division table and avoid relegation on the final game of the season.

During that season, Lennie Lawrence’s men ran out 5-2 winners over Chelsea at The Valley on March 5th, 1983. The Addicks went two goals up in the first half thanks to goals from Terry Bullivant and Kevin Smith. Chelsea pulled the score back to 2-2 at the beginning of the second half, before a Kevin Pates own goal and an Allan Simonsen brace sealed a comfortable victory for Charlton in SE7.

Charlton 3 Chelsea 0 (1989/90)

Another memorable win for the Addicks over Chelsea came in the 1989/90 season, when Charlton cruised to a 3-0 victory over Bobby Campbell’s side in August 1989. The Addicks’ first win of the season came over Chelsea, after drawing their opening three games in the league. A brace from Paul Williams and a goal from Paul Mortimer contributed to a convincing victory over their west London counterparts.

Chelsea 0 Charlton 1 (2001/02)

The 2001/02 season marked Alan Curbishley’s 11th season in charge of the Addicks. Charlton had a strong Premier League campaign, picking up a stunning away win over Chelsea in the process in December 2001 thanks to a last-minute goal from Kevin Lisbie.

Despite Chelsea dominating the game, the Blues couldn’t make anything of their possession. With just seconds of normal time remaining, Lisbie rose highest to head home a Paul Konchesky free-kick to snatch all three points in west London for the Addicks.

Charlton 2 Chelsea 1 (2001/02)

Curbishley’s men did the Premier League double over Chelsea in 2000/01 and they repeated the feat in 2001/02, picking up six points from their two meetings once again. Jason Euell, who was Charlton’s top goalscorer for the season with 11 Premier League goals, netted a brace to seal another last-minute win over the Blues.

Euell opened the scoring on 72 minutes, before Frank Lampard levelled for the away side nine minutes later. Much like Lisbie’s winner back in December 2001, there were the last few seconds of normal time remaining on the clock before Euell grabbed his second goal of the game. The striker nodded the ball home on 89 minutes, securing the win for the Addicks.

Charlton 4 Chelsea 2 (2003/04)

The 2003/04 season saw Charlton’s highest-ever Premier League finish, as Curbishley steered his team to seventh place in the top-flight. The team secured some memorable results along the way, including an impressive 4-2 win over Chelsea at The Valley on Boxing Day in 2003. Hermann Hreiðarsson opened the scoring for Charlton inside the first minute, with John Terry equalising for Chelsea nine minutes later.

The 1-1 score did not remain for long, as Matt Holland, Jonatan Johansson and Jason Euell all netted for the Addicks before the hour-mark. Eidur Gudjohnsen replied for Chelsea in the 73rd minute, but the home side proved too strong for Claudio Ranieri’s men in what remains a memorable festive fixture.
