Karen Hills: "The girls showed so much fight and character, and I’m super proud of them"

Karen Hills at Ipswich away.

Karen Hills was ‘super proud’ of her team after they battled back from a goal down to draw at Ipswich 1-1 in the league.

The game was played in wet and windy conditions and, after going behind to an 18th minute penalty, Hills’ side restored parity with an 83rd minute header from Gillian Kenney to secure a point.

“I’m really proud,” said Hills. “It’s been a good week and to come here and get that point in the way that we did, I thought was a credit to our players. It showed a lot of character, showed a lot of determination, right until the final whistle.

“We kept pushing and I think if the game would have been another five minutes, who knows what could have happened, because I thought we were definitely riding that momentum towards the end of the game, and showing that belief that we have week in week out, that we’re never going to stop until that final whistle.

“The girls showed so much fight and character and I’m super proud of them.”

This point comes after a win on the weekend against Durham in WSL 2, and prior to a Fifth-Round tie in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup away at Oxford United on Sunday.

With three games in seven days, it is a packed run-in for the team, but Hills’ is upbeat after taking four points from the two league games and is already looking forward to Sunday's fixture.

“This block of work’s been a good block of work for us,” she said.

“We’ll obviously take a lot of positives from it, but ultimately now our attention’s turned to the FA Cup, and we’ve got Oxford on the weekend, so it’s going to finish the week off in a good fashion.

“We know that we’ve got a strong team and that we’re going to go to Oxford and try to put ourselves into the next round of the cup. We know it’s going to be tough and challenging but the players in the form that they’re in, in the way that they’re playing for each other, I think it’s going to be a good test for us and we’re looking forward to it.”

Our next match is on Sunday, away in the Women's FA Cup against Oxford United. The next time the Addicks will be back at The Valley will be on Sunday, March 15th against Sunderland (KO 2pm GMT).
