Charlton star claims Sky Bet League One 'Goal of the Weekend' for Bristol Rovers strike

Jamie Ward has won Sky Bet League One’s ‘Goal of the Weekend’ for his opener against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

The strike – which arrived in the 10th minute – was the Northern Irishman’s first for the club and set the Addicks on their way to a 3-1 victory.

The goal owed a lot to goalkeeper Jed Steer, who claimed a Rovers free-kick before sending Ward through on goal with a fantastic kick forward.

Ward chested the ball down expertly and lobbed it over onrushing Rovers goalkeeper Jack Bonham and after the game Ward was full of praise for his stopper.

“All credit goes to Jed. He deserves the praise, not me. The keeper was far enough away for me to get it up and down, but it was a great kick from Jed and it was something that we spoke about earlier in the week so it’s important that we keep taking things like that on board.

“Everyone was saying it was a great first touch, but it was just nice to be able to get into that position and finish it off. In training, I’ve been hitting everything apart from the net so it was nice to see it go over the keeper and bounce into the net.”

Multiple angles of Ward’s goal are available to watch on Valley Pass and the game also saw Lyle Taylor – missing through suspension – join the Valley Pass commentary team.
