Lee Bowyer on who will take Charlton’s next penalty

Lee Bowyer will leave it to his players to decide who takes Charlton’s next penalty.

In Tuesday’s win at Burton Albion, the Addicks were awarded their ninth spot-kick of the season – eight of which have come in Sky Bet League One.

Following its award Lyle Taylor, Tariqe Fosu and Karlan Grant had a discussion in the penalty area before the latter tucked the penalty into the corner from 12 yards.

All three have now scored from the spot this season and, speaking at his pre-Doncaster Rovers press conference on Thursday morning, Bowyer admitted that it is down to the players to choose who takes them.

“I haven't got a clue who will take the next one,” Bowyer said. “I have no say whatsoever on the penalties. As far as I was aware, Lyle was going to be taking that penalty on Tuesday.

“After he missed one for us, I said 'look, you hit a good penalty, there was nothing wrong with the penalty, the keeper just made a good save, you're still number 1. If you want to take it, you've got first refusal. If you don't then that's up to you.'

“So that's something the lads speak about. That's two Lyle has passed on, so to speak, and Tariqe scored one and Karlan scored the other night.

“I trust them all and Lyle is the penalty taker in my eyes. If he doesn't fancy it for whatever reason, like the other night, then that's down to him.”
