Charlton fall to defeat at The Valley

Charlton 1 Portsmouth 3

The Addicks suffered a 3-1 defeat to Portsmouth at The Valley on Tuesday evening in the Sky Bet Championship.

Charlton started brightly in the opening stages of the game, as Harry Clarke had a chance to put the Addicks ahead inside the first minute. His effort was well saved by Nicolas Schmid.

Clarke then found Sonny Carey in space inside the Portsmouth penalty area. Carey did well to evade the Portsmouth defence, but his effort went wide of the post.

Terry Devlin netted for Portsmouth on 22 minutes, after firing a shot from range. His effort got the better of Thomas Kaminski and put the visitors ahead.

Amari’i Bell was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area, and the referee awarded a 35th-minute penalty to Portsmouth. Colby Bishop stepped up and converted the spot kick, to double the visitor’s advantage.

Nathan Jones made a triple change at the break, as Conor Coventry, Tyreece Campbell and Jayden Fevrier all entered the fray.

Devlin's second was a wonderful strike from long range that crashed in off the post 11 minutes into the second half.

Fevrier tried his luck shortly after, with a shot from range as he cut inside, but it curled just wide.

Fevrier’s persistence paid off in the 64th minute as the Addicks pulled one back, as he swept the ball home for his first goal in Charlton colours.

The ball fell to Tyreece Campbell in stoppage time, but his effort blazed over the bar.

The Addicks pushed to find a way back into the game, but the visitors came away with all three points.
