Leaburn: 'The fans and the atmosphere were great'

Miles Leaburn

Miles Leaburn was pleased to be on the scoresheet against Chelsea on Saturday evening, as he scored against the Blues in the third-round of the Emirates FA Cup in front of the Covered End.

The Addicks were on the wrong end of a 5-1 result, which maybe flattered the visitors.

“It was special occasion, the fans and the atmosphere was great and to get myself a goal, I am happy with that,” he said.

“The goal from Chelsea at the end of the first half was unfortunate, and a couple of goals towards the end with tired legs, it was unfortunate that it got away from us.”

The striker’s goal got the scoreline back to 2-1, as the Addicks pushed to find a way back into the game.

He described his goal: “I came crashing in for the corner, Lloyd [Jones] managed to get good contact on the ball, and the keeper saved it. Then, I swivelled my body and rifled it as low and hard as I could.”

Nathan Jones’ side played in front of a sell-out crowd on Saturday evening, the highest attended FA Cup tie at The Valley in 50 years.

Leaburn added: “In the game we needed as much momentum as we could get, and the fans provided that for us.

“For me, because I didn’t get to experience the semi-final atmosphere on the pitch in May, it really was quite special. I was speechless, looking around thinking this what football is, this is what makes it special.

“The gaffer always talks about us making The Valley a fortress and that is what we need to do and build upon our performances.”

The Addicks return to Sky Bet Championship action on Saturday when they host Sheffield United at The Valley. Don't miss out, get your tickets now.
