Gabriel Affiku - Volunteering
As part of Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT’s) partnership with Shooters Hill Post-16 College, CACT offers work experience to students studying for BTEC Sports qualifications who wish to develop a career as a sports coach, 18-year-old Gabriel Affiku is one such student.
Gabriel has been volunteering with CACT on the multi-sports programme, funded by Royal Borough of Greenwich and Peabody Housing, this summer and will continue volunteering at one evening session a week throughout the autumn. Through Gabriel’s volunteering with the Young Greenwich youth service via CACT, he has made excellent progress towards his football coaching qualifications.
Gabriel said:
“I am really enjoying working with the young people in the local community making their summer more exciting and enjoying my opportunity to work with CACT.
“I was really nervous at first but am learning all the time and can now really engage with the young people.”

“It is fantastic to work with Gabriel who we have got to know from our work with Shooters Hill College. Gabriel has been really engaging with the young people, encouraging them to get active following hard times in lockdown due to COVID.
“A big thank you also to our funders Royal Greenwich & Peabody Housing who finance these sessions and create opportunities for volunteers like Gabriel to work within the community.”
Kunle Labinjoh, a CACT Coach, who ran the sessions alongside Gabriel, said:
“Gabriel has been a very enthusiastic member of the team getting involved in all aspects of the sessions, and is a great addition to the team.”
